Fujian Province has achieved significant progress in its cultural development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), as announced at a December 9 press conference, (the third session) of “Strive to Be the First in Developing Chinese-Style Modernization; Vigorously Compose a New Chapter in the New Journey of Building a New Fujian” series, held by Publicity Department of the CPC Fujian Provincial Committee.

Theoretical work and social sciences have seen major breakthroughs. Fujian Province drafted and implemented a social sciences development blueprint and launched the “Five Actions” initiative for Marxist theory research. The Fujian Research Center for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era was strengthened, while the book Mountains and Rivers of Fujian: Xi Jinping’s Footprints in Fujian sold nearly 1.4 million copies. Grassroots theory dissemination reached over 100,000 annual lectures, with branded campaigns like “Fu Xiao Xuan (Fujian Publicity)” gaining traction.

Core values and civic civilization have achieved notable results. Major publicity campaigns effectively rallied public support as revolutionary culture preservation mechanisms improved. Core socialist values promotion through initiatives like “Civilization in Action” and “Fujian Courtesy” proved successful, with 8 prefecture-level cities and 13 counties/cities earning national “Civilized City” honors - ranking among China’s top performers.

Cultural heritage protection and innovation make significant strides. The successful hosting of the 44th Session of the World Heritage Committee and “Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song—Yuan China”’s World Heritage inscription brought Fujian’s total heritage sites to 5. The “Fujian School” arts movement produced 19 national “Five-One Project” award winners among 64 national-level accolades. Public cultural services ranked nationally outstanding, with programs like “Art Revitalizing Villages” receiving widespread praise.

The cultural tourism economy has demonstrated strong growth. A comprehensive policy system for integrated cultural-tourism development supported annual provincial conferences. In Fujian, cultural enterprises above the designated size generated RMB 620.49 billion in 2024 revenue, with emerging sectors growing 150% since 2020. The added value of the culture and tourism economy’s GDP contribution exceeding 10% confirms its role as a key economic driver.

New paths have been explored in international cultural exchanges and global communication. Global outreach efforts saw Up and Out of Poverty translated into 9 languages across 150+ countries, while productions like Minning Town gained international popularity. Fujian-Taiwan cultural exchanges deepened, promoting cross-strait integration.

Looking ahead to the 15th Five-Year Plan period, Fujian’s publicity and cultural sector will adhere to the principles of ideological guidance, people-centered development, upholding fundamentals while innovating, and openness and inclusiveness. The province will focus on enhancing the ideological leadership, spiritual cohesion, value appeal, and global influence of Fujian’s distinctive culture.
