Fujian Provincial Department of Science and Technology has recently convened an expert panel to discuss the feasibility of constructing the Fujian Provincial Marine Innovation Laboratory. Relevant academicians and experts were invited to study the feasibility of the establishment of the laboratory from such aspects as technology, management and finance.

The application for the establishment of the marine innovation laboratory was led by the Municipal Government of Xiamen with the supporting institutions being Xiamen University and the Third Institute of Oceanography, Ministry of Natural Resources. The expert panel has fully recognized the imperative and urgency of establishing the marine innovation laboratory and held that the construction plan for the laboratory is fundamentally feasible.

As a major province in marine resources and marine economy, Fujian Province enjoys a solid foundation in marine scientific research and boasts competitive marine-related research resources such as Xiamen University and the Third Institute of Oceanography. The Fujian Provincial Committee of the CPC and the People's Government of Fujian Province have attached great importance to accelerating building a "maritime Fujian" and advancing high-quality development of marine economy.

In recent years, Fujian Province has been relying on the construction of provincial innovation laboratories as an important strategic platform to improve its areas of weakness and build itself into a leading innovative province. Aside from building the first batch of 4 high-level provincial innovation laboratories by pooling the province's innovation resources, Fujian Province also started the construction of a provincial innovation laboratory for biological products and a provincial innovation laboratory for flexible electronics. This year, Fujian Province is also actively preparing for the construction of the marine innovation laboratory and the integrated circuit innovation laboratory, striving to build a laboratory system that is mission-driven and task-oriented.
