China’s first national basic science center in the field of oceanology, the Center for Basic Science of Ocean Carbon Sinks and Biogeochemical Processes, was approved by the National Natural Science Foundation of China with a high vote and launched in Xiamen City on May 23 after years of rigorous evaluation and on-site visits.

Approaching from “responding to climate change and supporting the demand for carbon neutrality”, the Center for Basic Science of Ocean Carbon Sinks and Biogeochemical Processes aims at the international frontiers of basic science on the formation process and regulation mechanism of ocean carbon sinks, and takes the original “microbial carbon pump” theory as the core of interdisciplinary research. Through the deep integration of biology, chemistry, geology and other disciplines, the formation process, regulation mechanism and environmental effects of ocean carbon sinks, as well as their response and feedback to climate change, will be studied thoroughly and systematically.

After the official launch of the Center for Basic Science, Xiamen City will accelerate the progress of related research work, further attract and gather outstanding scientific and technological talents at home and abroad, focus on promoting the in-depth integration of disciplines, and build a highland of marine science talents and an international platform for ocean carbon sink research.
